It’s ludicrous that I haven’t read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote until now. I thought I was the only person who hadn’t read it (although Bonnie fessed up that she hasn’t either).
There’s nothing left to say about this book – it’s genre-defining; it’s clearly a touchstone for many books since (I’m looking at you We Were the Mulvaneys); it’s absolutely gripping; and it’s beautifully written.
So instead of a review, I’m going to retell the story in songs. Of course, you’ll understand my sequence of choices because you’ve read the book. Note: the Flashdance inclusion is relevant for the song title only!
Small Town / John Mellencamp
God Told Me To / Paul Kelly
Band on the Run / Wings
Blue Bayou / Linda Ronstadt
Manhunt / Karen Kamon
Back on the Chain Gang / Pretenders
Framed / Ritchie Valens
25 Minutes to Go / Johnny Cash
4/5 Gripping.
As part of the 20 Books of Summer reading challenge, I’m comparing the Belfast summer and Melbourne winter. The results for the day I finished this book (June 18): Belfast 11°-18° and Melbourne 6°-13°.

So now that I’m the only one left on Earth that hasn’t read this, I should probably make it a priority. 😊
Your not alone, Bonnie, I haven’t read it yet either! But I did see the movie made from it 😉
I’ve put off watching the movie until I read the book! haha I’ll have to make sure to watch it once I do though.
Hi Kate, well done and a great way to review a book. Not a nice story, but Capote handled it well, a fantastic read.
Reblogged this on Tasmanian Bibliophile @Large and commented:
I have read ‘In Cold Blood’. I really enjoyed the way Kate reviewed it (in songs).
I read this a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Love your playlist – it’s perfect! 🙂
Brilliant 😀
I only just read this this year as well, and couldn’t believe it had taken me so long. I love your song choices, they’re all perfect.
Ingenious way to do a review, Kate!
I haven’t read this one yet either… But I will, someday. Also, great selection of songs.
Great choices! This is a very common required high school read in most of the country, and that’s when I read it. I would probably appreciate it more now if I read it by choice, rather than by assignment. Still, it was much better than when I was forced to read Wuthering Heights.
