Sample Saturday – three from authors I love

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Run by Ann Patchett

Why I have it: Because Commonwealth.

Summary: The lives of two very different families over the course of one day.

I’m thinking: Yes, I think this will be my next Patchett.

Paradise Lodge by Nina Stibbe

Why I have it: Because Love, Nina.

Summary: Fifteen-year-old Lizzie finds herself working in an old people’s home in Leicestershire in the 1970s. There’s a lot to be learnt at Paradise Lodge and from its residents.

I’m thinking: Maybe – I like Stibbe’s straightforward style but I’ll read Man at the Helm first, given that it’s in the TBR stack.

52 Blue by Leslie Jamison

Why I have it: Because The Empathy Exams.

Summary: A story about being alone: the voice of a whale, singing at an unusual frequency is recorded at a remote military base in the Pacific Northwest. The whale can’t communicate with other whales. Thousands of miles away, a sudden illness plunges a 48-year-old woman into a coma. She wakes up, barely able to speak, adrift in the world.

I’m thinking: Yes – odd and quite lovely.

  1. I’ve not read any of Stibbe’s fiction, apart from the few stories that were in An Almost Perfect Christmas, but I did love Love, Nina.

I loved Commonwealth but wasn’t big on Bel Canto, so I’ve been unsure about picking up more from Patchett. I’ll eagerly await your ratings!
