Sample Saturday – a dutiful wife, a kidnapping, and a re-invention

sample-saturday-4

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The Private Life of Mrs Sharma by Ratika Kapur

Why I have it: It was on Naomi’s Books of the Year list (and I thought Jenny might like to add it to her ‘Reading India’ list).

Summary: Dutiful wife holds the fort while husband is away working. Then she meets someone on a train. It’s a battle of traditional and modern vales.

I’m thinking: Yes, the sample was short but the writing was good.

An Untamed State by Roxanne Gay

Why I have it: Ditto above (except the bit about Jenny’s India list).

Summary: Daughter of one of Haiti’s richest men is kidnapped. A ransom is demanded. Father doesn’t appear to be paying up.

I’m thinking: Yes, opening chapters were gripping stuff.

Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

Why I have it: A friend recommended it (and given that she’s reading it while traveling Europe, it must be good enough to tear her attention away from the Weihnachtsmärkte).

Summary: A girl re-invents herself but her perfect life is a perfect lie.

I’m thinking: Prep meets Gillian Flynn? Sure, sounds like the perfect beach read.

  1. Thanks for that reco, Kate. Will put it on the list. Stay tuned for 2016, am getting a bit excited (while CONSUMING Ferrante at a rate of almost a volume a day. Want to get the rest of her in before year’s end.)

    • I’m saving #ALLTHEFERRANTE for next year (I keep telling myself it’s so that I ‘have something to look forward to’, as if reading from my TBR stack is going to somehow be depriving – have to keep reminding myself that I was busting for 80% of those books when I got them and that there will be five star reads lurking in the stacks.
